State Police raid Limone's home

Restaurant owner Peter Limone, who spent 33 years in prison for a mob murder he did not commit, is under investigation by state police for organized crime. Police raided the 74-year-old grandfather's home in Medford Friday night.

In the words of one source familiar with this saga, "If you're that freakin' stupid, you deserve to go back to the can."

Limone was once a West End mobster working gambling rackets in the '50s and '60s. His devotion to Omerta is supposed to override everything in his life -- including his devoted wife Olympia -- but wouldn't more than three decades of wrongful imprisonment put a crimp in that code?

There's also the matter of a $28 million judgment Limone was awarded in 2007 for his lost years in jail. (Above photo: Limone and his wife, backed by lawyers Jullianne Balliro and Michael Avery, discuss the award outside the federal courthouse.) The feds currently are appealing.

How could Limone jeopardize himself and his grandchildren's futures by cozing up to the city's fragmented numbers-running mob? Years ago, reports of his involvement with young toughs emerged from state police surveillance. Limone had apparently tried to quell a dispute among warring capos that threatened to result in bloodshed. If he's delved into organized crime any deeper than that, he is indeed a foolish man.

But he also represents a prized scalp for law enforcement. Would police be extra motivated to mine the life of this North End grandpa looking for a wiff of criminal activity? No doubt.
